PROF LENNART HAMMARSTROM

Professor, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm

Prof Lennart Hammarström was born in Sweden in 1950 and went through medical school (Karolinska Institutet) in Stockholm subsequently specializing in Clinical Immunology (PhD thesis in 1979).

For the past 25 years he has been working on different aspects of PIDs,trying to find the genetic basis of some of these disorders and immunotherapy, searching for novel ways to treat our patients. His time is shared between clinical duties in the diagnostic laboratory (at the Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic centre) and basic research.

Lennart also serves as a guest professor in immunology at the Beijing Medical University, China where he is trying to build a primary immunodeficiency network, similar to the one in Europe (ESID).This is in order to raise awareness about these diseases in China, create a network of interested clinicians, establish a diagnostic laboratory and to build a patient registry.
