DR FLUVIO PORTA

Head of BMT and Oncohaematology Unit , Spedali Civili, Brescia

Dr Fulvio Porta graduated in Medicine at the Pavia University, after he covered the position of BMT coordinator at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. In 1985 he started the BMT Unit at the Paediatric Department of Pavia, Italy, assisting oncohaematological children. From 1990 he became the head of the Oncohaematology and BMT Unit of the Paediatric Department of the Spedali Civili di Brescia. This is the referent national centre in Italy for the treatment of children affected by primary immunodeficiencies. The unit has performed more than 300 bone marrow transplants in PID children. Within the Unit 7, stem cell prenatal transplants have been performed both in SCID foetuses and in foetuses affected by osteogenesis imperfecta.

Fulvio Porta has been a member of the Inborn Errors Working Party of the European Group for Bone marrow Transplantation (EBMT) since 1988 and is the coordinator-elected of the Transplant Group of the Italian Association of Oncology and Haematology (AIEOP). Main lines of research of the Stem Cell Laboratory that Dr Porta coordinates are regenerative therapies by stem cell of genetic diseases and prenatal stem cell therapies. He is a member of the editorial Board of the Journal Experimental Haematology and has authored more than 130 publications reported on Current Contents.
