PROF EDVARD SMITH

Professor, Clinical Research Centre, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm

Prof Edvard Smith is Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. He has two major research interests: Primary Immunodeficiencies, especially B lymphocyte defects, and the development of new forms of plasmid-based gene transfer. He has published 300 scientific papers and been invited to more than 80 international meetings. He has been a board member of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies from 1994 to 2004 serving as president from 1998 to 2002. He has been a board member of the European Society for Gene Therapy from 1995 to 2001. He is an editor for the state-of-the-art textbook in primary immunodeficiency diseases, published by Oxford University Press. He has been the tutor of 20 PhDs and advisor for 16 post-doctoral fellows. He has received and coordinated several international research grants. In 2005 he became the Descartes Prize Laureate for collaborative research in life sciences, the most prestigious prize in life sciences awarded by the European Union.
